Original EVO 4G Receives an Ice Cream Sandwich Port

Posted In News - By Mark Hearn On Sunday, November 27th, 2011 12:52pm PDT With 9 Comments

A true classic never dies and that expression especially holds true with Sprint’s most successful Android, the HTC EVO 4G. Almost as soon as Google released the AOSP build of Ice Cream Sandwich, those crafty individuals over at XDA managed to conjure up a port for the original EVO 4G.

Currently an Alpha build, the port is far from perfect, but a number of things are working. Whether you’re a member of a developer’s group or you’re just the type to tinker, this might be worth a look. If you decide to give things a whirl, be sure to share your experience with us.

Thank you for the information. I would like to express my disappointment with the support that HTC has provided to this specific phone. As I have stated numerous times in both this forum and in other forums, the gingerbread update for this device has been a failure for a majority of the EVO 4g owners. While I have never updated my phone to gingerbread (based on the feedback of other EVO 4g owners), numerous android forums have complaints from EVO 4g owners regarding problems resulting from the gingerbread update. I find it interesting that the” Alpha Build for Sandwich ” you are offering originates not from HTC, but from a third party and/or individual. “Smart phones are a large investment both monetarily and time wise. It is too bad that the manufacturer had chosen not to support this particular device. The phone is a great device and could be so much more with adequate support from the manufacturer. One can only wonder if HTC is more concerned with producing newer devices, rather than supporting the older ones.

I agree with you 100%, Stephen. I have an Epic 4G and it’s been the same battle. At least HTC has waaaaaay more kudos than Samsuck.

When you said, “One can only wonder if HTC is more concerned with producing newer devices, rather than supporting the older ones.”, though, isn’t it obvious? All companies are more interested in new devices. It’s a semi-effective ploy to release a piece-of-crap phone, not support it, then release a new great-working one next to get double the money out of innocent consumers!

Afraid I have to totally disagree. I have the EVO 4G and updated to Gingerbread the day it was released. I have had ZERO issues. As far as the “forums” filled with complaints, my guess is the majority are posted by people that really should not own “smart phones” in the 1st place. HTC has not yet confirmed whether or not they will release an ICS update for the EVO 4G. It will depend totally on whether or not the hardware can handle it. Of all the vendors, IMHO, HTC is far more committed to supporting their entire lineup (older devices included). We all have opinions, and I respect yours … but I totally disagree. On a side note (to Damon Ross), I totally agree … Samsung’s Froyo update was a disaster, and it appears their Gingerbread update is just as bad.

Same great experience with my old Evo 4g and it’s update being flawless. I was actually saddened to let it go when I upgraded to my Photon and it took some time for me to forget about how good it had been to me when I purchased an SGS2 Epic touch!!

I agree with you that the evo 4g is an excellent device. The hardware is solid, and I would recommend anyone owning an android device to gain root access and not deal with the crappy ROM the manufacturer comes up with for new android releases. The sky is the limit when it comes to custom ROMs. Anyone who can use a smartphone and use a computer can root their phone. Check out the forums at XDA if you wish to learn how to do this.

They should support the evo because that was the worlds first 4G phone and most successful

  7. EVO4G4ever says:

Mark-Thanks for the post. The EVO 4G developer community is alive and well and I don’t really care if Sprint decides to push an update. Just tried two different custom ROMs with Ice Cream Sandwich and very pleased with results (hoping they find a fix for the camera soon). Just about everything works. My EVO will be around for quite some time.

Been running alpha 2 of ics-deck since it was released and so far it’s awesome. Two major problems though.
    1. No camera
    2. Can’t purchase stuff on the market (not too big of a problem, but more of a hassle because I have to purchase everything from another device). Other than that the market works fine.

I can’t wait for the next release.

I just have to say that every time I have had problems with my phone and Sprint was not able to resolve it, HTC would not even bother listening to me so I agree that HTC sux as a company. That being said, I am currently running Deck’s Alpha 7 rom and I love the phone on ICS. I am sure the phone will eventually have a good complete working rom that runs circles around HTC nonSense UI.
