Sprint Tweaks Network in Wake of iPhone Data Issues

Posted In Featured, News - By Mark Hearn On Wednesday, November 30th, 2011 11:29am PDT With 23 Comments

Aside from producing Sprint’s most successful retail day in company history, the iPhone has also made headlines for the Now Network that have been less than flattering. Almost as soon as Apple’s popular fruit phone flew off of retail shelves, reports quickly began to spread of Sprint customers experiencing less than stellar data speeds. Without a doubt, Sprint’s network has recently been plagued with network issues, but the iPhone’s slowness is said to have been an outside issue.

Cnet reports that Sprint has recently rolled out a wave of network enhancements designed to improve user data speeds. Using a combination of customer feedback and internal research Sprint claims they were able to target the affected areas. Vice president of product development Fared Adib stated “Sprint continues to monitor device and network performance to ensure that customers get the performance they expect from our products.”

If you’re an existing Sprint customer that made the switch to the iPhone and saw a 3G performance decrease, we wanna hear from you. Let us know if you’ve seen an actual improvement or if the Now Network is feeling more like the Ow Network. We await your comments below.

Highly opinionated and somewhat eccentric he shares his ramblings about his network of choice here at SprintFeed.

I hate that they claim it was an iPhone specific issue. It’s network issue. Data speeds in Houston on my Epic Touch have been horrendous, but i was able to get them to look into it and what do you know, its a capacity issue they will be upgrading very soon. It’s slowly gotten better but there are still a few areas where it is abysmal.

Sprint’s downhill slide with data speeds has NOTHING to do with the iPhone. My speeds have been on a free fall since the Evo arrived on Sprint a year and a half ago. I’ve seen no difference pre and post iPhone. And there is enough research out there to show that Android users are eating up more data the iPhone users. Try again Sprint.

  3. Chad Harwick says:

I’m less than normal speeds today. Usually I get 350k down and 450k up at work. Now I’m at 255/U and 215/D

  4. Cecil says:

I agree completely with Tommy and kfra315. Android devices, and especially the EVO, must have clogged the EVDO network, because that’s when the slowdown became noticeable. Now the iPhone is on top of all that, and network clogging probably reached a new high. My new Photon gets 0.01 Mbps on 3G/EVDO, which is the same as what my friend is getting on his new iPhone. Unfortunately for him, he doesn’t have 4G, which is a fantastic fallback for me when I’m in a 4G coverage area.

  5. Julio Duverney says:

I’m in Houston as well and I left garbag Sprint for Verizon.

I swear Houston only get like 200k from Sprint 3g

  6. sidekicker89 says:

has anyone noticed Sprint’s 4G network hasn’t really grown since it rolled out? Their coverage map looks THE SAME!

  7. Brian Jones says:

speeds are still slow no matter what happens here in Bakersfield Ca Sprint takes to long to fix issue’s & is slow on puting up new towers so that we can get better coverage its really Sad

  8. Tommy Thompson says:

Just did a test inside my apt. got 566 down and 115 up, so it’s gotten better. depends on the area too. The main problem area for me was a Target on Sawyer. was getting 50kbps if I was lucky, started getting over 500 yesterday so they definitely are trying.

  9. things have been very slowly getting better but it still sucks. often enough i can’t stream slacker without pausing all the time.

  10. Wheeler062505 says:

I have had issues with speed from day one but I really haven’t complained because after having the android Phones that I have had I am tickled the I have a phone with an awesome battery life. At least I dDon’t have to shut off my data just to save battery or carry around an extra charger like some. So I guess it a trade off of sorts.

  11. Michin says:

I got my Rezound last night and got 22mbps/17 up. I was getting 300kbps/200 on sprint. For those thinking og switching to verizon i highly recommend it.

  12. Anonymous says:

What tweak and enhancements did they make because i’m in NYC and my speed is still 435kbps down and 161kbps up.

  13. Matt says:

I live over by Galveston Bay and my data speeds were horrible with my evo 3D. They were 200 down and 100 up, and I can’t get 4G in my house. Called up sprint and told them to send me an airave or cancel my contract. Needless to say, my speeds are 2mb down and 600kb up.

  14. Johndeleon0 says:

Trying living in deep South Texas near the Mexican border. Sprint and other carriers have forgotten us. On most days my Photon is deathly slow. I traveled to San Antonio last week, and the speed was awesome. 4G almost every where I went. Man I miss it.

  15. Rwalford79 says:

For the most part, I still get embarrassing speeds on Sprint, i have a Nexus S. The issues started when the EVO launched and have encompasses both 3G and 4G networks. Sprint continues to use the same three excuses for slow data.
    1. Capacity issues – CDMA and EVDO and WiMAX are capacity and spectrum efficient, so stop blaming something inanimate.
    2. Network outage in your area – Must always have outages in my area then. Seems like there is always a tower down in my are.
    3. Upgrade your phone- Sprint tried to claim I needed a new phone and new Android OS when my speed took a dive. I was using their newest phone with the most up to date OS revision…wtf are they thinking.

Sprint clearly has too many MVNOs on network and its time to start delivering the contract postpaid plan customers the speed and price that prepaid seems to be getting. At least until Sprint can sell off their network to Verizon of anyone that will take it.

  16. TEE says:

Still holding on to my samsung epic. I guess what would make me switch to an iphone would be a larger screen. Siri. I would like to be able to customize the voice. Priced no more than $199. So I guess I’m still wth android for now

  17. Feliomar says:

Well my speed test show less than .5 Mbps but I can stream netflix so who knows

  18. In Meriden, CT I average 30-40 kbps, and in Hartford, CT i average 27kbps….it’s pathetic, but I will never return to AT&T. At least I can make phone calls and not drop a call.

  19. Styles Jason says:

Well the comments are interesting and hopeful if we that are customers voice our concerns at least that aspect will get it off our chest I am stand behind Sprint however systemic issues should be addressed.

  20. Dutch says:

I’ve been a Sprint customer since they came to Louisville, Ky. (1997) No 4g here. 3g speeds have been poor for 6-8 months. I have seen no improvement in data speeds. I just don’t know if i can justify the extra $50 a month for my 2phone family plan to switch carriers. But whats the point of having a great smartphone with these awful data speeds? Sprints keeps making promises to improve it, but I need to see it!!!!

  21. Dutch says:

    I assume this is sarcasm?

  22. Dutch says:

ATTENTION!! SPRINT DATA SUFFERERS!! Get “Roam Control” from the android market. (I have an EVO 4g)It forces your phone into roam mode. I have no financial ties to them!! Its the best $3.99 I’ve spend!
I just did a 4 tests from the exact spot in my house. 2 on sprint and 2 roaming. Sprint tests 319up/622dn & 486up/476dn. Roam tests 1155up/755dn &1033up/766dn !! Not sure whos towers I’m roaming on. Probably AT &T or Verizon. T-mobile perhaps. I think it’s a great bandaid until Sprint gets its act together.
I think they will because they way too much invested in the Iphone. A reported $20 Billion!!!

  23. Mike S says:

    Ow network.

It’s SLIGHTLY better in some places, like in the middle of no where out by the cows… Live in a city? Forget about it. 1000ms ping times, .01/.00 data speeds (that is what speed test actually showed) And they refuse to admit its a problem. When you call, they act like you are the first person to call in with the issue, and they know they are lying to customers…
