Spot Check: How’s That EL29 Update Treating Your Epic 4G Touch?

Posted In Polls - By Mark Hearn On Thursday, January 26th, 2012 4:36am PDT With 21 Comments

It seems like it was just yesterday that Epic 4G Touch owners across the map began receiving the EL29 software update. Oh that’s right, it was yesterday! In the world of smartphones, sometimes updates do more harm than help. Taking this into consideration, we’d like to take this opportunity to survey Epic 4G Touch owners out there and make sure everything is going according to plan. If you’ve recently applied version S:D710.0.5S.EL29 to your trusty GSII, be sure to point out any improvements or bugs that you may have noticed.

I’m typing this on a D710 and I want even aware we were getting another update. I’m running EK02…

    M.

  2. Tommy Thompson says:

The newest update removes Carrier IQ. The push started yesterday and will continue the next 10 days till 100% users have it.

  3. Suddenly says:

Nothing happening yet for me in Dallas

  4. Mikenstein says:

I applied the EL29 update this morning. No problems, so far. “Phone” icon looks a little different (it is sort of broken into a keypad shape), and the answer & cancel buttons when receiving a call are very different looking now. Those are the only things that I have noticed so far.

  5. Mikenstein says:

I should note, “this morning” was about 16 hours ago, so after using the GSII all day, that is all I can report.

  6. Danrod67 says:

nothing yet here in H town

  7. Spensergig says:

I was awake & surfing about 4:45am this morning, when an announcement of the update flashed onto my screen. I clicked the “install” option, and the update took about 3 minutes. (I had wireless enabled at the time, as I am otherwise limited to 3G – no 4G within 75 miles of here.)
So far, I don’t see any changes.
What exactly should I be noticing?

  8. Raywhite3611 says:

The software update changed the following: dialer icon, youtube appos updated, continueous home screen scrolling, removal of the numbers on the dot in the app holder, speed improved, better standby time.

  9. Warren says:

Is there any way to get back the old answer & cancel buttons styles?

  10. Slimsheivi says:

i am getting worse battery life, but other then that and the answer/ignore sliders, all seems to be the same.

  11. Slimsheivi says:

also, my baseband version says “S:D710.10S.EL29″ as opposed to the ” S:D710.0.5S.EL29″ in this article. is that normal?

  12. OC says:

As am I. Battery life is awful now. Previously I would go to sleep with 90+% battery and wake up with it still in the 80% range. Woke up this morning and the battery was closer to 40%.

  13. Jbutks13 says:

Better battery life during stand by. Also smoother and faster.

  14. Jeremy Podolski says:

Continuous scrolling on home page and app menu are nice. Speed and batt life are at least as good, if not better. I’m indifferent to the call answer slider. It’s OK. The update has unfortunately eliminated the aesthetic panning effect of the background in both static and live wallpapers. I hope they fix this as the panning adds very nice polish to the UI looks.

  15. TeamMax says:

I’m unable to install app updates to apps that are moved to the SD card.

  16. Anonymous says:

my battery life is worse also!

  17. Here says:

Update worked great, I like the new icons and I’m digging the continuous scrolling. I have NO battery problem because when mine gets low, I PLUG IT IN. Love the phone and the new update!

  18. Brett says:

Same here. I don’t know what kind of battery life I was getting before the push, but I never heard the low charge alarms before. Now I hear them within five hours of unplugging at the office, with moderate use.

I just did a factory reset and blew the whole phone back to scratch, and didn’t set up my google account. I put it in Airplane mode, charged it to 100%, then unplugged and left it on my counter with the screen off for exactly 2 hours. I’m now at 80%. At that rate, I’ve now got 10 hours of standby with no radios, no syncs, and no software installed.

    Dub Elew Tee EFF??

  19. Mremale says:

I hate that the update stops the scolling wallpaper and a live wallpaper or two. I hear this is due to the lawsuit with apple. I think if i pay 400+ for a phone (sgs2) i should be able to root and customize as i please. Don’t take away my options when you put out and update… MAKE THINGS BETTER!

  20. mremale says:

NOT GOING TO UPDATE… NOT WORTH IT TO ME. Wish i could get it to stop asking to update

  21. Power24 says:

Besides the scrolling wallpaper going away and a slight drop in batter life i have noticed faster performance and a more accurate signal on my SGII. however i am sad to loose the scrolling wallpaper….i know it’s not major but it was just the icing on the cake for me
