Nexus S 4G Ice Cream Sandwich Update Starts Feb. 16th

Posted In News - By Mark Hearn On Wednesday, February 15th, 2012 6:56pm PDT With 25 Comments

After much debate of which device would be Sprint’s first smartphone to carry Android 4.0, it appears the burning question has been answered. Our pals over at AndroidPolice have gotten hold of an internal screenshot which pegs the highly anticipated Nexus S 4G Ice Cream Sandwich update for a February 16th release. Like most software updates, this will most likely hit over a matter of days. If you’re among the lucky ducks that happen to get hold of the software push during its first wave, be sure to share your experience with us and the rest of the world.

  3. what? if you get the ota or your not rooted you can just apply in recovery and you lose nothing… so go ahead and download things you wont lose anything..

  4. Xidalf says:

My Nexus S 4G is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked, but I’m still using the Stock Gingerbread rom. Will I get the OTA ICS update?

  5. you will get the update but you wont be able to apply it… but you will be able to pull it from the cache file and upload it to xda so the devs can make a flashable rooted rom then you can upgrade your phone

  6. Johnrose13 says:

i guess no one got the update today!

  7. Eric Spartz says:

nope, havent seen it , havent gotten it, no signs of it. man fuck this im so annoyed if this ever happens or if we have to wati after the launch of the GN … im so disappointed so far, i love the phone but man would this be so cool with an ICS update. this is the 3rd time wev been taunted with the big treat and has completley SO FAR been a complete bust

  8. Zeronokata says:

has anyone got the update yet

  9. DJ Allyn says:

    Yeah, right.

It’s funny, but this entire story line trails back to a post on Android Police. No official word. In fact, not even real live, breathing people who work at Sprint have heard anything about it.

I’m not talking about the Sprint store sales people, I am talking about the support people who would have to be let in on the news ahead of time in order to be prepared for the inevitable onslaught of customers who have had a bad installation. (and yes, it is going to happen)

I spent a couple of hours talking to different Sprint people throughout the day. Each have told me the same thing: Middle of March. Maybe.

  10. dancedroid says:

i was wondering the same thing. just got home and i been looking around but i havent heard a word about anyone getting it today. what a drag!

    where is my Sprint G-Nex??????????????????

  12. times like these make me want to switch to an iphone or a windows phone. The big thing about the nexus s on sprint was that it was 4g. so sprint decides to stop expanding wimax in my area… fail. the another big selling point was that it would get big updates sooner than other phones. now im waiting 2 months after the gsm version has ics for my phone to receive it. there better be a good reason why this is taking so long.asus can release ics for their tablet before google can release its own operating system for its own stock android phone. maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if google or sprint put out and announcement with a timeframe. i think ill try another os on my next upgrade…

  13. DJ Allyn says:

I feel the same way. If it wasn’t for the fact that I use gmail and it would be easy to keep track of everything that way, I would have gone with a blackberry or iphone. But I was told at the Sprint store that ICS was going to be out “within a couple of weeks” and that the Nexus S would immediately be upgraded because it was a “pure Google phone”, so I went for it.

4G? Not so much. I can’t tell any difference between it and the 3G phone I upgraded from. Sprint has a lousy signal in West Seattle and if I am inside my house I don’t get much of anything. I drop calls all of the time.

I keep the navigation gps stuff turned off because it will burn down a battery in about two hours just sitting idle. The damn thing will almost burn in my hand it get so hot. I took it into Sprint and they told me that it does that when it isn’t getting a good signal. Yet they just built a new cell tower less than a half mile LOS from me.

So this not having ICS at this point of time is just another reason to drop the whole thing and move to Verizon.

  14. Joshnoel28 says:

I have known about ICS for almost a year (I learned about in the middle of September.) I asked a Sprint worker about when the update may come out I was told never for the NS4g. I was totally annoyed about it.Though now it seems like that has changed. Now i found out it would come out the 16th. Well not really. I want ICS now. I don’t usually like the IPhone but I would really consider switching. If ICS doesn’t come out soon.

  15. smarterthanuare says:

Google has been considering canceling the ICS update for the Nexus S phones and instead updating it to Android 5.0 when it’s available. Nothing is for certain though.

  16. Das says:

Don’t post rumors. Unless you can prove what you said, then don’t post it.

There’s no guarantee that the Nexus S can even handle Android 5.0 depending on if it’s a simple security fix of sorts or additional OS content in HD that the NS can’t handle due to a single-core CPU and 512MB of RAM.

  17. Das says:

I’d say, if you want a true Nexus experience, switch from Sprint to T-Mobile. The only reason they got ICS before NS4G is because Google themselves pushed it to the phone and T-Mobile didn’t (and couldn’t, as per GSM rules) interfere. Sprint is CDMA and can control what Google puts in the update (as evident by them removing tether unless you pay for it) and they control WHEN you get it.

When people think “Google controls updates!”, they’re really thinking GSM, not CDMA.

  18. Really need to hide this article … It never happened and new users may think it did since it is splashed at the top of your home page.

  19. DJ Allyn says:

Hide it why? To save the embarrassment of people jumping to conclusions here?

I think that it is indicative of how screwed up Sprint is.

Yes, in reality, this is ALL Sprint. Not Google, not Samsung, but Sprint. It is THEIR program that prevented Google from doing a straight upgrade to the Nexus S like they did with the T-Mobile Nexus S. Pretending otherwise is just a hard case of denial.

  20. Tut says:

    Any luck? Anybody?????

  21. Ajcomyns says:

    has anyone got ics yet?!

  22. Ravent says:

WRONG!!!!! WRONG!!!! WRONG!!!!!. IDIOT, Google can’t push anything out to any phone. The only one who can push anything to your phone is the company who’s network you are on. DUH! Now, what happened is Google got the ICS update for the Nexus S GSM to T-Mobile first. Why, Only T-M and Google know that. Stop spouting your ignorance.

  23. Jmurdock says:

LOL, you people and your threats crack me up. You would have went with a BB. Really a BB? SO let me get this straight, you are so mad that your Nexus S, which is far better in every way to any BB, didn’t get ICS, you would switch to a BB. I call BS on that. Oh, Oh, and you want to switch to an iPhone. Why, so in six months you can be pissed they come out with a new one with better software. Then you update your, now obsolete, iPhone and find that the new software makes it unusable. Or that the best features wont work on it. LOL go ahead.

  24. Chris R says:

Oh shut up with your “Im gonna switch to iPhone”. BS. You have known about it for a year huh. You learned about it in mid September. Moron. That was 5 months ago. What planet do you live on.

  25. Rondo says:

Lies all lies. Google go bite an apple bitches
